Why are Republicans so afraid of Obamacare?

As the October deadline to opening the Obamacare health insurance marketplace draws near, you can almost smell the sweat on the brows of Republicans.

The mere thought of easy access to affordable health insurance terrifies them so much, Republicans are planning a government shutdown to try to stop it.

If you think you're not a liberal, think again

During the health care reform debate in 2009, opponents of what is now commonly called Obamacare, called the new law socialism. Political pundits will never forget images of anti-Obama, Tea Party supporters carrying signs that said, keep your government hands off my Medicare.

But many of the people protesting against government control of Medicare didn't know that it was and always had been a government-controlled program.

Even today, many of the people receiving Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security benefits insist that they are not getting any government assistance, according to polling data.

How can so many people be convinced of something that is so completely false?

Striking down healthcare individual mandate may lead to U.S. single-payer system

Whatever the Supreme Court decides in the Affordable Care Act case, the impact will be profound.

The whole point of the Affordable Care Act, also known as “Obamacare,” was to make health insurance more affordable and more accessible to more Americans. It does achieve that goal. In it's first year, the Affordable Care Act helped add more than 1.2 million people the the rolls of the insured, according to Forbes.

However if the Supreme Court decides that the individual mandate is unconstitutional, the entire health insurance industry will change dramatically.

Healthcare repeal will cost American lives

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee: Healthcare repeal will kill Americans

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Democrat of Texas, was very candid rebuking republican attempts to repeal healthcare reform.

Jackson Lee said, "Frankly, I would just say to you, this is about saving lives…..this is killing Americans if we take this away, if we repeal this bill,” according to The Hill.

Some of the benefits of ‘Obamacare’ include insurability for people with pre-existing conditions, additional money for seniors on Medicare to pay for drugs and tax credit for employers who provide health insurance to their workers.

Approximately 46,000 Americans die each year due to lack of health insurance. President Obama’s healthcare reform was designed to reduce those numbers by making healthcare more accessible and affordable for an additional 32 million Americans.

Republican move to repeal Obama health care just a show

Incoming republican House Leader John Boehner has pledged to make his first order of business the repeal of the health care reform law passed last year by the 111^th Congress. But the move is strictly symbolic.

In a recent statement, Rep John Boehner reaffirmed his pledge to bring ups a vote in the House to repeal ‘Obamacare,’ the controversial health care bill that President Obama and the democratically controlled Congress passed in the last session. 

While Boehner will be able to bring the measure up for a vote with his new republican majority, there is virtually no chance that the bill will pass, so the effort is more for show than anything else.

If the repeal of ‘Obamacare’ passes the House, it will move on to the Senate, where Majority Leader, Democrat Harry Reid is not likely to let the Senate vote on the measure. And even if somehow the Senate did pass the measure, President Obama would still have to sign it, which is also not likely to happen.

Republicans are aware of the fact that their efforts to repeal the health care from law has virtually no chance of passing, but will likely go through the motions as a symbolic gesture.

The GOP will likely continue to blame health care reform for everything from unemployment to global warming, in hopes of manipulation the minds of voters so they can win the White House in 2012. 

Misrepresenting Obama’s health care reform was a successful ploy during the year-long debate over the bill. However, since the bill passed, Americans have realized that it not only did not include any ‘death panels’ as republicans claimed, many are enjoying the advantages of the bill, like the end to exclusions for pre-existing conditions.
