President Obama bans Gulf oil drilling

President Obama has withdrawn his support for new offshore oil drilling in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico.  The decision reverses the position he took last March, which encouraged the expansion of tapping America’s oil and gas resources.

In an announcement from Interior Secretary Ken Salazar on Wednesday, Obama’s new order places a seven year ban on drilling for oil and natural gas within 125 miles of the Florida coast.

The 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill disaster is what prompted President Obama to reconsider his energy policy. Evidence from the President’s Oil Spill Commission has revealed that holes regulation and lack of oversight was at the root of the BP oil spill disaster.

The undersea volcano unleashed by the faulty blowout preventer in the Deepwater Horizon rig sent more than 4.9 million barrels of oil and gas into the Gulf of Mexico. Scientists are still unsure of now bad long-term environmental damage will be, but there is already evidence that it is significant.
